Create Group or Grouping

A. Steps to Create a Group in LMS

Step 1: Access Course Groups

  • Open the Course

  • Go to:
    Course Navigation → Participants

  • Click the dropdown menu

  • Select:
    Groups


Step 2: Create a New Group

  • Click:
    Manage > Create group

  • Fill in:
Field Example
Group name Bachelor IT Year 1
Group description IT students intake Jan 2026
Group messaging Enable if required

  • Click:
    Save changes


Step 3: Add Users into Group

  • Select the created group

  • Click:
    Add/remove users

  • Select students from the right panel

  • Click:
    Add

  • Click:
    Back to groups

Now the group contains the selected students.

Example:

Group: Bachelor IT Year 1

Students:
- Ahmad
- Siti
- Kumar
- John

B. Steps to Create a Grouping in Moodle

Step 1: Access Groupings

  • Open the Course

  • Go to:
    Participants

  • Dropdown menu

 


Step 2: Create a Grouping

  • Click:
    Groupings tab

  • Click:
    Create grouping

  • Fill in:
Field Example
Grouping name Faculty of Computing
Description All computing programmes
  • Click:
    Save changes

 

 


Step 3: Add Groups into Grouping

  • Select the created grouping

Example:

Grouping:
Faculty of Computing
  • Click:
    Show groups in grouping

  • Click:
    Add/remove groups
  • Select the groups:
☑ Bachelor Computer Science Year 1
☑ Bachelor Information Technology Year 1
☑ Diploma Computer Science
  • Click:
    Add

Now the grouping contains multiple groups.

Example:

Grouping:
Faculty of Computing

Groups:
 ├── Bachelor Computer Science Year 1
 ├── Bachelor Information Technology Year 1
 └── Diploma Computer Science

Example:

Course:
Research Methodology

Grouping:
Faculty of Computing

├── Group: CS Intake Jan 2026
├── Group: IT Intake Jan 2026


Grouping:
Faculty of Business
│
├── Group: Marketing Intake Jan 2026
├── Group: Finance Intake Jan 2026

Then lecturers can control activities by faculty/programme without creating separate courses.
